Determining The Heat Of The Grill

There are two ways you can determine the temperature of the briquettes. You can either use the thermometer in most newer grill lids or if your grill doesn’t have one, you can approximate the heat by using the “hand test.”

The Hand Test

Put your open hand a safe distance over the grill. It shouldn’t be lesss than 5 inches away from the top of the cooking grate. This is the distance you use to measure the heat. Always pull your hand away if it is too hot. Also, make sure you are not wearing anything that is flamable that can catch fire and injure you.

After placing your flat hand over the grate and if you need to pull away between 2 and 4 seconds then your grill’s heat is considered High. The temperature is around 450 to 550 degree fahrenheit.

If you need to pull away after 5 to 7 seconds then your grill’s heat is considered medium. The temperature is around 350 to 450 degrees fahrenheit.

Finally, if it takes 8 to 10 seconds to pull your hand away from the grate then your grill’s heat is considered low. The temperature is areound 250 to 350 degrees fahrenheit.
